Alistair Dormer - Group CEO – Rail, Hitachi Ltd
Alistair is the CEO of Hitachi’s Global Rail business, which has major operations in Japan, Europe, South East Asia and the Americas and provides a full range of railway products and services. These range from ‘Very High Speed’ rolling stock - including the world-famous ‘Bullet Trains’ – to signalling solutions, full turnkey projects delivering the construction of new Metro Rail systems, and state-of-the-art Traffic Management and E-Ticketing solutions.
Alistair is a highly experienced senior leader with over 10 years’ experience as CEO, firstly with Hitachi’s European Rail Business and then in his current global role since 2014. In addition, Alistair has been Chairman of Hitachi Rail Europe since 2012 and Chairman of Ansaldo STS, a Hitachi Group company listed on the Milan Stock Exchange, since 2015.
Prior to joining the rail industry, Alistair spent 10 years in the aviation industry with BAE Systems and 10 years in the Royal Navy.
Alistair has a passion for people development and creating opportunities for young people. Since 2014, in partnership with Sunderland University and Gestamp Tallent, Hitachi has sponsored South Durham University Technical College. The college opened its doors in September 2016 next to Hitachi’s Newton Aycliffe Manufacturing Facility as a new Technical School for 14–19 year olds, focused on technical knowledge and skills development, as well as academic studies.
Alistair joined the National College for High Speed Rail Shadow Board in 2015 to add rail industry experience, overseeing the development of the college and helping to create a much-needed pipeline of skills into the industry.
Karen Boswell OBE - Global CAO and Managing Director - Hitachi Rail Europe
Karen leads Hitachi Rail Europe’s (HRE) total railway system business and is a member of Hitachi Rail’s Global Management Committee. As MD, Karen is responsible for delivering the InterCity Express Programme (IEP), which will usher in a new age of rail in Britain for fare-paying customers with the manufacture of high-speed trains for the East Coast and Great Western Main Lines, as well as new commuter trains for Scotland and Inter City trains for the West of England and Transpennine Express. She is also focused on expanding HRE’s business by attracting new orders for rolling stock, service delivery, signaling and traffic management systems.
Karen’s senior board director experience includes delivering strategic and commercial success within complex stakeholder environments for private, public and government sector businesses. A turnaround and mobilisation specialist, Karen has worked extensively across the full breadth of corporate functions and consistently delivered high performance through energetic leadership and engagement with colleagues and customers. She is an expert at building teams that deliver increased customer and employee satisfaction, improved revenues and margins and a passionate advocate for fairness and diversity in the workplace.
In 2015 Karen was elected President of the Railway Study Association for 2015/16 (the first female President in its 106 year history) and a Council Member of the Railway Industry Association, which represents UK-based suppliers to the world’s railways. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.
Karen was awarded Institute of Directors’ Director of the Year 2014 (Large Company category, Yorkshire region), Woman of the Year 2014 at the Women 1st Shine Awards, and received the award for Outstanding Personal Contribution at the 2015 National Rail Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Women in Business Awards 2015.
Karen was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honors 2016.
Nick Hughes – Sales Director – Hitachi Rail Europe
Nick leads Hitachi Rail Europe’s sales division, based in the London headquarters. With over 20 years’ experience delivering equipment supply and services across the rail sector, Nick is building on Hitachi Rail Europe’s impressive sales record to secure new rolling stock and traffic management contracts across the UK and Europe. Nick joined Hitachi earlier this year after previously serving as Chairman & UK Country Representative for Ansaldo STS UK and earlier as Sales and Marketing Director for Alstom Transport.
Jack Commandeur - Chief Operating Officer - Hitachi Rail Europe
Jack is responsible for overseeing and delivering the substantial growth in operations that is taking place across HRE and as it continues to acquire new rolling stock and train maintenance business. An Engineer with a background in aviation, Jack has been in the rail sector since 2008 and has broad international experience, working in both the UK and overseas including South Africa and the Netherlands.
Jack has previously held the role of Engineering Director at East Coast Mainline as well as senior management positons at Southeastern Railway and British Airways.
Laura Dunley - Commercial Director - Hitachi Rail Europe
Based in London, Laura has been Hitachi Rail Europe’s Commercial Director since June 2017. With 15 years of experience working for a variety of First Group companies, Laura has a deep understanding of customers’ needs, whether it’s the train operators, or the passengers.
Laura joined the company to progress commercial development within Hitachi. Her responsibilities include directing our marketing activity and identifying new opportunities to drive sustainable revenue growth.
Andy Rogers – IEP Programme Director – Hitachi Rail Europe
Andy Rogers is responsible for ensuring the timely delivery of the company’s contractual obligations across all rolling stock, train control, signalling and maintenance projects - with a particular focus on the Intercity Express Programme.
He moved into the rail industry as an experienced project manager in 2002 and joined Hitachi in 2012 as the IEP Project Manager. Andy is based in HRE’s head office in London and took responsibility for all of the company’s projects in 2014.
Paul Barker - Global Comms, Brand & Marketing Director - Hitachi Rail Europe
Paul joined Hitachi Rail Europe in October 2015 with the purpose of developing and executing the company’s internal and external communications. Paul is a senior corporate communications & IR professional, with significant experience leading IR and stakeholder engagement for both FTSE 250 and private companies of scale across the consumer, retail, leisure, transport, property & infrastructure and TMT sectors, including Director of Corporate Communications and Corporate Affairs roles at HMV Group PLC and Freeserve PLC.
Prior to joining HRE Paul was a Partner in a leading international communications consultancy firm.
Jane Mee - General Counsel - Hitachi Rail Europe
Jane is responsible for providing legal advice and support as well as assuming governance and legal compliance responsibilities for HRE. Jane advises on all aspects of the rail business, providing legal counsel on a wide range of business affairs.
With over 20 years’ experience in the field of law, Jane also has extensive knowledge of rail, having previously held positions with Bombardier and London Underground Ltd. She has in-depth experience in commercial and legal aspects of PPP/PFI arrangements and complex engineering infrastructure contracts.
Berry Sas - Projects Director - Hitachi Rail Europe
Berry is responsible for Hitachi Rail Europe’s Rolling Stock Projects, which includes the design and delivery of trainsets for the ASR, West of England and Transpennine Projects . He also manages the Testing and Approvals Team and the Project Management Office Team.
With over 25 years of Rail Industry experience, Berry has led projects for a number of Train Operating Companies, including London Underground, delivering new tube trains as part of the London Underground Upgrades Programme.
Antonio Coluccia - Finance Director - Hitachi Rail Europe
Antonio is the Finance Director of Hitachi Rail Europe and Planning & Management Control Vice President of Hitachi Rail Italy. With over 27 years of experience, Antonio looks after strategy planning, due diligence and evaluation of the companies we work with.
Prior to joining Hitachi (then AnsaldoBreda) in 2001, he was the director of the Administration, Finance and Control Department at Iveco Inc., where he managed and coordinated all activities associated with new product and business launches.
Antonio was a member of the Finmeccanica Faculty as a Subject Matters Expert after obtaining his Masters from the INSEAD Business School.
Ross Nagle - Chief Operating Officer for Manufacturing - Hitachi Rail Europe
Ross Nagle joined Hitachi Rail in April 2017 as Chief Operating Officer for Manufacturing in Newton Aycliffe.
Previously, Ross worked for 15 years as Senior Vice President of European Operations at the Gates Corporation, where he was responsible for multiple sites, including manufacturing facilities and distribution centres in eight European countries. With experience in both global manufacturing and engineering, Ross has led teams through company growth to enhance productivity, supply chain and distribution.
As Chief Operating Officer Manufacturing, he will work closely with all Hitachi Rail teams to ensure manufacturing and engineering at Newton Aycliffe supports the strategy in the UK and across the global Hitachi Rail group.
Rory Lamont - Procurement Director - Hitachi Rail Europe
Rory started his career in Aberdeen, working for BP’s North Sea business in 2000. After gaining experience in procurement of goods and services, as well as procurement processes, he moved to London and joined Accenture. Over the ensuing 5 years he enjoyed a broad exposure to many industries, whilst developing a professional focus on procurement and supply chain management, before rediscovering his passion for oil & gas and joining PetroCanada, working in Syria, Canada and again in Aberdeen.
Over the past 10 years, Rory has examined the parallels between account management and category management and the interface between sales and procurement. This has lead him to develop teams that get the best from the markets they interact with whilst creating great client/supplier relationships. Having recently joined the rail industry he’s excited about the possibilities of applying what he has learnt to this new sector.
He still lives in London, with his wife, two children and an allotment.
